A strong AI knowledge and innovation basis is very important to the Netherlands. One important aspect is the connection of Dutch researchers with the wider world, especially in Europe. By awarding these first ten groundbreaking research projects in the field of artificial intelligence, AiNed and NWO will make a contribution of nearly 800,000 euro to this goal.

The granted projects cooperate with several foreign partners such as the ETH university Switzerland, University of Cambridge, University of Southern Denmark and the English company Exscientia. The NGF AiNed XS Europa grants are meant to explore promising ideas, innovative and risky initiatives within the field of artificial intelligence. What matters is that the results strengthen the Dutch AI position.

The themes of the projects vary from describing the behavior of single-layer materials, such as graphene, with advanced machine learning, through which their full potential can be unlocked for extremely sensitive sensors in high-tech industry, the use of artificial intelligence to discover new fungal strains for application to the ‘biobased economy’, and the research of new dimension in the relationship between stress and reading, with possible applications to combatting low literacy levels in the Netherlands.
